Pentecost is one of those festivals which tempt the preacher to go in the wrong direction. God did not pour out the Holy Spirit on Pentecost in order to illustrate abstract spiritual or ethical principles. Rather, on Pentecost God did something essential for our salvation and for the salvation of the world. Like Christmas, Good Friday and Easter, Pentecost it is a day to proclaim what God has done in Christ. In fulfillment of Christ’s promise, God poured out his Spirit to empower the church for its life in the world. We don’t need another Pentecost any more than we need another incarnation, paschal offering or resurrection. By faith, we are beneficiaries of all that God has already done. The proper tone for the festival of Pentecost is boldness and confidence in the mighty acts of God.
