Rejoice Greatly

Shout for joy, O daughter of Zion!
Shout in triumph, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
O daughter of Jerusalem! – Zephaniah 3:14

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
– Phiilippians 4:4

The season of Advent encompasses our longing and lament. It shouts its word of warning and calls us to repentance. And then it invites us to rejoice (and light the pink candle!).

Why rejoice? Listen to the readings for this third Sunday in Advent.

“The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst,” the prophet declares., “The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. … You shall fear disaster no more.”  (Zephaniah 3:15)

“The Lord is near,” Paul proclaims. (Philippians 4:5)

“One who is more powerful than I is coming,” John the Baptist
announces. “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” (Luke 3:16)

Shout for joy, for the Lord is near. The Lord’s coming is not only good news, it is the best of all possible news. Rejoice and exult with all your heart.
