Good Friday Reproaches

O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Testify against me. I led you forth from the land of Egypt, but you have prepared a cross for your Savior.

Holy God, holy and mighty, have mercy on us.

I led you through the desert forty years, and fed you with manna. I brought you into the land of promise, overflowing with abundance, but you have prepared a cross for your Savior.

Holy God, holy and mighty, have mercy on us.

I opened a way for you through the sea, but you opened my side with a spear. I led you through the wilderness in a pillar of cloud, but you led me to the judgment hall of Pilate.

Holy God, holy and mighty, have mercy on us.

I scattered your enemies and defeated the nations before you, but you gave the whip to my back and the rod to my face. I gave you water to drink from the rock, but you gave me vinegar and left me to thirst.

Holy God, holy and mighty, have mercy on us.

I gave you a royal scepter, but you gave me a crown of thorns. I lifted you up in great power, but you hanged me on a cross.

Holy God, holy and mighty, have mercy on us.
